Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge certain calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
