Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
