EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
